Formed in a student apartment in Kichijōji, western Tokyo. The practice of making beats started with found sounds: a creaking chair, the ambient noise of a specific room at a specific time. Nujabes was the formative encounter — discovered through Samurai Champloo before the soundtrack was understood as genre-defining. J Dilla's Donuts was the second revelation: incompleteness as a compositional choice.
